Innovative 21st century couples are opting for exciting
ceremony locations guaranteed to wow guests and provide once-in-a-lifetime photo
ops. Adventurous couples have exchanged vows in the most offbeat and exotic
locations imaginable: theme parks, zoos, mountain-tops, hot-air balloons, ski
slopes and caverns. Couples have wed while parachuting, on horseback, underwater
(SCUBA-assisted), on skis, even suspended from rock-climbing harnesses.
Nowadays, those wanting indoor weddings outside of houses of worship might
choose their own or their parents’ home - or someone else’s, a reception venue,
a historic house or public building; a winery restaurant; a hotel; a casino,
nightclub or bar; a luxury cruiser, a spa resort...anywhere that appeals to, or
holds special significance for you and your betrothed.
Unless it suits your style, don’t feel obliged to make your marriage ceremony
formal and traditional - even if you’re marrying in a church, synagogue or
mosque. Many modern couples want a religious wedding with an individualistic
spin, and clergy are generally happy - within reason - to oblige. These days,
even at formal church weddings, couples have substantial leeway to choose key
elements of the ceremony - their vows, the music, songs or hymns chosen, the
style, trappings and order of proceedings of the service.
Traditional church ceremonies don’t fit the dream of many of today’s couples,
and modern ceremonies reflect their individuality and diversity. Often, bride
and groom come from different religious, ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic
backgrounds. Some are marrying for a second or third time, or getting married
after years of cohabitation. Many couples already have children, from their
previous relationship, who may want to play a part in the ceremony.
For many couples and multiple reasons, civil ceremonies offer an attractive
alternative to religious ceremonies conducted in houses of worship.
Hiring a celebrant - civil, religious or a clergy member who’ll officiate at a
non-church location allows for greater flexibility in the style of ceremony and
choice of venue. Most celebrants are well versed in a variety of ceremonies, and
will work with you to create the occasion you want.
