Code of Ethics for Marriage
Educators, Relationship Coaches, Family Life Educators
Introduction -
The purpose of a code of ethics is to establish standards for
Family Life Educators and Coaches and the protection of clients
seeking educational and intervention services.
Members and staff of the Institute, in agreeing to the code, accept
their responsibilities as educators and coaches to their clients,
their colleagues and the National Marriage Centers Institute.
1. Professional Behavior -
1. An educator and coach will use his or her position to
promote the best interests of their clients, and will avoid personal,
commercial or other conflict of interests.
2. An educator and coach will maintain appropriate professional
boundaries, and not misuse any client relationship.
3. An educator and coach offer educative service to clients, and will
work with all people without discrimination.
4. An educator and coach will work with honesty and integrity, being
respectful of both clients and colleagues, protecting their dignity
and welfare.
5. An educator and coach will work within the limits of their
professional training and experience.
6. An educator and coach will not attempt to assess, counsel or advise
on problems outside the scope of their professional training or role
as an educator and coach.
7. An educator and coach will, as far as possible, ensure the
confidentiality of clients whether in individual sessions or
groups settings. All information disclosed will be treated as
confidential, unless the client otherwise gives permission.
8. An educator will respect people's personal boundaries, and also
respect their right to choose the level at which they will participate
in activities.
